It looks like 2012 will already be one to remember because it is the year Tyler got LASIK eye surgery!

Oh was he thrilled to be taking off these glasses, he has been diligently wearing for a week. Plus he is such a good sport letting me follow him around with my camera, documenting his every move!! |
Today was the big day and he was SO excited!! I was in the fetal position in the corner. OK, not really. But I was nervous for him. For heaven's sake, these are his eyes being cut open, folded back, etc. etc. I tried to be brave, especially considering it was him who held my hand (never wavering at needles, bodily fluids, blood, etc) through five children's births! With that being said, I did video the whole thing for him (and whichever of our posterity are interested) to watch. I did that out of one eye on the big screen while I held my breath and prayed. The easier eye took 26 seconds and the more complicated 47 seconds. Whew...was I glad when it was over. He chatted away through the whole thing, they were even laughing in the operating room at one point! I wanted to knock on the window and remind the Dr. to focus, but reconsidered, sat back down and continued praying. :)
Here is he during the procedure.
We walked out of the surgical center and he was already blown away at what he could see. Smiling as he identified signs that he would never be able to read without his contacts in! So great for him! After 25 years of contacts, this will be life changing!
More pics tomorrow of his "cool" glasses Andrew immediately called for after he's done!
In the meantime, lots of rest for those baby blues. So grateful all went well!
*Post-edit note: I took Tyler in for his post-op the next morning and his vision (using both eyes) is 20/20!! To say he is thrilled, would be an understatement. He can't stop smiling!! As we are out together he is reading signs as far as he can see them. And then in the middle of the night, (when Matthew came in at 3:21 a.m. to his side of the bed, luckily) he quite energetically exclaims to me, "Rachelle, I can read the alarm clock"! Hooray!

Oh, I am so envious! Perhaps one day I will follow in his footsteps and get mine done too. I want so badly to be able to see. But right now I guess I must focus on my braces. Can't have too much excitement in our lives at our age! Congrats Tyler, so thrilled for you. Love to all!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm jealous! (Of course, only fear prevents me from getting LASIK myself. I've been working up the nerve for years.) I dream of opening my eyes in the morning and being able to see! Maybe one day.
ReplyDeleteMy husband had that done just over seven years ago. Not a day goes by that he doesn't notice what a miracle it is he can see with no glasses/contacts. He grew up wearing pretty thick glasses--what a blessing to benefit from the miracles of modern medicine!
ReplyDeleteYay for Tyler's new eyes!! That's where I had my surgery, too. They're so awesome.
ReplyDeleteI'm thankful EVERY DAY that I had LASIK. Seriously. Every day.
